Gloucester Quays Christmas Markets Tipi Project

Cotswold Tipis worked besides Gourmet Food Markets over winter 2018 to create a warm and cosy Christmas market venue at Gloucester Quays. Set up on the concrete pavement in front of the Gloucester Waterways Museum, the tipis, ice rink and santa’s grotto were the centre stage of this year’s Gloucester Quays Victorian and Christmas Markets.

Why we love a winter tipi

Winter doesn’t have to mean “cold”. Tipis originated in northern Scandinavia as wind resistant and warm shelter for nomadic people, so they’re great at withstanding the harsh winter weather. They are curious, versatile and resilient structures which is why we knew right away when we were approached by Gourmet Food Markets that our tipis would be a great option for their two month long operation. We installed air heaters to keep the Giant Tipis warm – always very effective! – and the large clear front entrance made them an inviting retreat from the cold and an unique experience for shoppers at the Christmas Markets, which ran from 10th November 2018 to 6th January 2019.

Setting up on hard-standing

We have a specially made hard-standing kit that enables our tipis to be put up on concrete or other impenetrable ground without the need for any stakes. This means our tipis really can be set up anywhere, town centres, shopping malls, car parks, airbases etc. For the Christmas Markets, this created a new option for an attractive and alternative space where customers could enjoy a mulled wine or a freshly baked pizza by the ice rink.

One of our extension kits was put in place to create an extended service area for the wood-fired pizzas being made on site. This was a fantastic choice for the food providers who were able to prepare and serve food inside the tipis whilst using their wood-fired pizza oven outside. The event co-ordinators chose to use bark for their flooring, which created a magical winter woodland effect, coupled with the forest of snow covered fir trees set up all around. Battery powered candles in jars, wooden log slices and fur seat coverings completed the look.We really enjoyed working with Gourmet Food Markets through the build and with ongoing support throughout the event. Big thanks to the directors and on-site team who worked endlessly over the Christmas period to make this event happen! If you’d like to see the tipis for yourself, please come meet us and them at our Spring Open Day on 30-31 March 2019 at Chedworth Farm, near Cheltenham!
