07 Jan Cotswold Tipis at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe
Cotswold Tipis is run by Campingninja, an events company with a history of delivering events and campsites at some of the world’s largest events – and lots of little ones too! Starting with the Olympics in 2012, Campingninja progressed onto running campsites and event spaces at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Le Tour de France, UEFA Champions League Finals and most recently at The Open Golf Championships in 2018.
One of our ongoing projects is Edinburgh Festival Camping, a pop up campsite designed to deliver an awesome experience and budget accommodation in Edinburgh during the Festivals, which are held every August. In operation since 2015, Edinburgh Festival Camping has become part of the infrastructure of the Festivals and the tipis are the heart of our campsite. We love creating Edinburgh Festival Camping, but it is the tipis that make this event so exciting for us. The home to our Fringe stage, Official Venue 403, the tipis are the centre of activity on the campsite and fill up with visitors enjoying live evening entertainment, pub quizzes, our licenced bar, hot food and board games. Being at the Fringe, in terms of performances, means that you never quite know what you are going to get but we love that both new and seasoned performers will get on our stage and perform to our guests. The tipis are the centre of activity and having them as a facility has transformed our guests’ stays. Being able to hang out inside a large, dry, warm space, play games or have a pre-bedtime hot chocolate with live entertainment are comforts and conveniences that we think are invaluable, plus the atmosphere and community that is created over the 4 weeks that we’re open to the public is really unique.During this project, the tipis are up for about 5 weeks and see thousands of people pass through them. They are weatherproof throughout so guests can sit or kids can play on the floor without any worries. We have seating for up to 120 guests plus a furniture set which provides plenty of space for moving around, dancing, standing by the fire pit or chatting at the bar. The tipis will hold up to 300 guests with the sides down and more with the sides lifted. The entrance to the Tipis is our All-Weather Entrance kit – it is Scotland after all! The doorway is extended, creating a large entrance space with a clear PVC panel to let in light and keep in the warmth. The All-Weather Entrance kit can be rolled up or zipped closed so it’s ideal for long events or rainy days.We also use our Bell Tents at Edinburgh Festival Camping, a popular option for camping during the Festivals. Fully kitted out with double and single air mattresses and bed linen, thick 13.5 tog duvets, throws, lighting and simple furnishings, they’re a cost effective, hassle-free way for individuals and groups (up to 6) to stay in style.
